Dr Philip Lenden

IP Advisor, Strategist, and Patent Attorney

I'm a dual-qualified European and UK Patent Attorney based in Cambridge, UK, with over 10 years of experience working primarily in the chemistry field. Before starting Simplify IP in 2022, I worked in house for a global sustainable technology company, and in both small and large private practice firms.

Simplify IP was founded with a commitment to providing clear, understandable, and commercially relevant IP advice relating to both mature and emerging technologies. As well as patent filing and prosecution, I can help with advice on IP strategy and commercialisation, licensing, freedom to operate, and contentious matters such as patent litigation support and offensive and defensive oppositions at the European Patent Office.

I have been responsible for patent portfolios in areas such as catalysis, battery materials, and industrial manufacturing processes, and have practiced in a range of chemical technologies as diverse as renewable energy sources, organic semiconductors (e.g. OLEDs), packaging materials, food compositions, cleaning products, small molecule pharmaceuticals, dosage forms, and medical devices.

Before becoming a patent attorney, I completed a PhD in synthetic organic chemistry at the University of Oxford, and have a Masters degree in chemistry with medicinal chemistry from the University of St Andrews.

I'm passionate about diversity and inclusion within intellectual property, especially neurodiversity, gender inequalities, and socioeconomic barriers to entry to the patent profession. As part of this, Simplify IP is a signatory of the IP Inclusive EDI Charter. I’m currently a member of the CIPA Council, as well as being on the CIPA Diversity and Inclusion Committee.

I’m also a (very) amateur musician.
